I knocked on Preston’s front door. He was Callum’s best friend, and I could place money on it that this was where Callum had gone.

How the fuck could he just walk away from his own kid like that? Was he really that goddamn shitty? I knew Mom and Dad hadn’t raised him like this. In our household, if you made a mistake, you suffered through the consequences.

Had just one semester at college already changed my little brother so much?

Preston opened the front door. “Fuck. You’re looking for Callum, aren’t you?”

I nodded once. He sighed. “Callum! Your brother is here!”

I leaned on the porch railing with my arms crossed over my chest as I waited on Callum to come out of the house. It was still early as fuck in the morning, but I knew just about every single family on this street was already up and moving around, getting started on Christmas morning festivities.

Callum was pulling a shirt over his head when he stepped out onto the porch. He glowered at me as he crossed his arms over his chest.

“What do you want?” he asked me. “You’ve fucking got it all, Colton.”

“Really?” I snapped at him. I pushed off the railing, turning my body to face him. “That’s how you want to start this shit? Is that why you’re fucking walking away from your own fucking kid?”

He just clenched his jaw, not answering me, but it was answer enough. I fucking laughed. “You’ve got to be shitting me,” I swore. “She didn’t make this fucking baby by herself, Callum.”

He shrugged. “You want to be with her, you can take care of the baby, too, Colton.” I wanted to punch him, and it took every bit of my restraint not to. “I’ve got enough shit on my plate with one already. I can’t take care of another.”

“Are you fucking serious right now?!” I exploded, stepping towards him. He took a step back. Callum knew I was trained well enough to kick his ass, even if he and I were almost the same size. “Do the crime, do the fucking time, Callum!”

He glared at me. “I’m not changing my mind on this shit, Colton. She can fucking figure this shit out. She should have told me from the very beginning so I could have figured something out instead of waiting until Jhenna is already almost due.”

“And you shouldn’t have stuck your dick in another bitch,” I snarled at him. He actually flinched. “You’ve got about seven months – give or take a couple of weeks – to figure out if this is what you really fucking want, Callum. And if you haven’t made a decision yet, be prepared to hear from my fucking lawyer. You’ll either be signing over your fucking rights and allowing me to adopt the baby, or you’ll be paying child support. Stupid decisions get you stupid fucking consequences.”

With that, I strode down the porch to my car. I didn’t even give a fuck that I laid rubber on the concrete as I spun out of the driveway.
